The manuscript forming this website was written at St Catherine’s College, University of Cambridge, by David A T Mackie at the request of Dr Brian Allen, former director of the Paul Mellon Centre, London. It contains all the material known to the author on Raeburn and on his works, including a lost sculpture by him, some drawings and the engravings after his portraits, with notes on his engravers. Doubtful and rejected works are also included. An outline of the artist’s stylistic development locates Raeburn in the social and intellectual world of Scotland and, artistically in Rome where he studied and where he was profoundly influenced by the Baroque. A European perspective is stressed. A biography of the artist is included. All known documents relating to the artist are present while provenance records go no further than 2020. It is not intended to further update this material.
This website will not be maintained indefinitely and therefore readers are invited to download or print out the manuscript for their own use so as to help ensure its preservation.
The manuscript is made available free of charge under David Mackie's copyright (see foot of pages).
